target your customer with the right websiteWhen clients come to Forward Motion Studios looking for a website redesign or a new website, they are often surprised by one of my first questions:

Who are your target customers and how well do you know them?

Say what?

This first question is usually followed by my second: who will be visiting your Website and what will they gain by doing so?

Say who?

One of the biggest mistakes I see from business owners is not being able to tell me who their customer is and why they need to come to their website.

Business owners seem to know what colors they prefer (not what their customers like) and what design they think they want based on their own likes and dislikes – not from any market research from their customers or potential customers.

I think it can be difficult for people to receive feedback which differs from their own – especially when it’s a creative endeavor like building a website. The process can produce strong feelings.

However, we typically don’t buy cars because they look pretty sitting on the car lot, we buy cars because of the features and benefits a certain car will bring us.

A smart business website needs to address the features and benefits for a particular customer need.

And in order to build a website for that customer, you need to know who that customer is. Right down to how old they are and what they like to buy.

A “pretty” website doesn’t automatically translate to immediate sales.

Really.

A website needs to provide for the needs of the reader viewing it: your customer. The “prettiness” is secondary.

Let me use a case in point.

Let’s say you are a hip, young 30-something business owner selling Sports Memorabilia/Fan Apparel and Souvenirs. You want a new website to bring more business into your small store in a local mall.

At first glance, you might think your best customers are teenagers that are into sports and their parents.

You might be tempted to build a visually bright and busy website to target that customer.

Here at Forward Motion Studios Web Design, we could just go ahead and build that website. I mean, if it is what our client wants – right?

But what if through questioning and research we find that this hip business owner’s best customers are actually retired men?

Wouldn’t this mean a completely different kind of website? We would want something more simple in design, easy to navigate with larger fonts.

We’d also want to watch the load time and how the site appears in older browsers, in case this particular customer doesn’t update their computer very often.

We’d build a website with this best customer in mind. We wouldn’t worry about the teenagers and their parents because they will naturally come for the products.

But we don’t want to lose hip business owner’s best customer because the website is too frustrating to use and the information they need isn’t readily available.

We want to keep them happy while attracting more customers just like them.

This is why it is important to be able to answer the question: who are your target customers and how well do you know them?

Next, we’ll want to know your budget, but I’ll save the budget discussion for another post.

Not sure of your website plan? Heather Montgomery, CEO of Forward Motion Studios is happy to walk you through the process by asking the right questions. Call us at 707-578-1390 today and let’s set an appointment to build you the right kind of business website.

Every few months on of our clients will inevitably receive an email which says something like,

Guaranteed Top Placement On Major Search Engines Unlimited Traffic 24/7 for a low Flat Monthly price!

Our guess is that they can also sell you some swamp land for a cheap price in Florida  . . .

fish in front

Often, business owners are lured by the sound of this advertising pitch.

It brings up the old fear of is my website getting enough traffic that many business owners have about their website presence.  The problem with this pitch is search engine optimization needs to be as customized as your business cards.

A one-stop-fits-all approach doesn’t work and never will, but you could waste a lot of money going down this dead-end road.

We hate to be the bearer of some tough love here, but just because you build a website, it doesn’t mean that people will automatically come see it.  It still goes back to Marketing 101 and your website is just one more piece of your marketing plan.

Basic Marketing First
The first thing we ask our clients when it comes to search engine love is

who are the people you want to serve with your website?”

Is it existing clients, other businesses, new clients, prospects? Are they predominately male or female? Are they married, single, or divorced? Are they under the age of 18, over 55 years old? Where do they live? How much money do they make? Think about your best clients – because these types of clients are the ones that you want to bring more of into your business.

How did your best clients find you?

Keyword Research
If a business owner can tell us who their perfect client is, then we research what keyword phrases that client will use to find their business website.

Will they be looking for a particular business in a certain city location? Are they price driven? Do they want to only deal with a local business?

We also advise the business owner to ask their best clients how they heard of their business, and even ask them what search terms they might use to find their business. You might be surprised at what your clients tell you.

We take the above information plus other ideas we have, and we perform searches for these terms in Google, Bing, and Yahoo to test how a business site is ranking in search.  If we are building a new website, then we use this search for testing to see if the competition shows up where you’d like your business website to be.

This is just  a small sample of the work we do in making sure your website shows up when potential clients search for you. There are other important factors like writing your web content, page titles and section headings with your key words in mind.  There’s also social search and how regular updates to your website can influence search results.

Local Search
Where business owners get lost on the search concept is when they want front page results for a generic keyword phrases like wedding consultant, a term that brings back 1.4 million results in Google. Can you really be a wedding consultant to the world, or is it better if your clients find you under the term Hawaii wedding consultants, or Hawaiian Island wedding planners or even more specific with Maui weddings?

With these last three search terms we take a search return from Google of 1.4 million choices down to under 320k.  It’s easier to compete with the 320 thousand for front page placement than 1.4 million.

For arguments sake, let’s say you did end up on the front page for wedding consultants, would it do your business any good for 30,000 women in South America to hit your website when you cannot help them?

Why drive traffic to your business website for the sake of driving traffic?

All that does is use up bandwidth and slow your website down for those clients you want to find you.

What good is first page placement in Google for a term if it drives traffic you can’t use?  You may as well just burn your money for all the good it will do.

And without knowing you, your business or anything about your clients, how is it exactly these companies can promise you page one search placement without meeting you?

Even Google offers its own search engine advise for free at Google Webmaster Central Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

So don’t buy what those search engine emails are selling, okay? Call us at 707-578-1390 if you aren’t getting the search results you’re looking for.

Our continued success to you,

The FMS Team

Business profits with social media logo

This weeks Social Media workshop, Drive Business Profits With Social Media was great fun.

I met some wonderful small business owners looking to take their business to the next level with social media.

We’re sorry that you missed it, but we will be releasing a webinar and workbook online in the next few weeks.

A common thread
I notice in my classes is that many business owners don’t have an outline for their social media campaign, nor are they able to answer some basic marketing questions about their business in a clear, concise manner.

Yet, they have already signed up for Facebook and Twitter, and don’t understand why it isn’t working for them.

You must know who you are and where you want to go before you leap into social media. You have to know how to describe your business in one sentence and tell your “hook”. A “hook” is an exciting or interesting back story or statistic that gets your potential customer engaged. Creating a concise elevator pitch is essential – especially online – where people are distracted and don’t have much time.

One example:  Forward Motion Studios moves business forward through effective marketing and internet solutions. Besides, we’re fun.

There are some basic questions every small business owner should be able to answer before jumping into social media.  I’ve decided to list a few of them here to help you out -

1.  Who exactly is your customer?  Can you describe them in detail?

For example, our customer is the medium to large business (4-100 employees), who outsource their marketing and web design.  They are based in the United States, understand networking, handle themselves professionally and are enjoyable to work for – with a slant towards crazy fun.  The CEO or business owner is experienced and open to suggestions.  They are not afraid of technology – but they are not interested in being on the bleeding edge.  Their age is 28 – 56.

2.  What problem does your business solve?

An example for us, Forward Motion Studios steps in when companies need marketing support from brand – to print – to web with social media training thrown in because we think they need it.  And we are just so helpful sometimes!

3.  What benefits do you bring to your customer?

For example, Forward Motion Studios offers a wide variety of services that encompass the various aspects of marketing both online and off at a fair price with a distinctively personal touch. Every business is unique to us.  What about you?

4. What promise can you make to your customers?

We don’t make false promises.  What’s yours?

5. What are you trying to accomplish with social media?

_____ Build brand image

_____ Educate about products

_____ Create better search visibility

_____ Promote positive reviews of products, services or company

_____ Sell products

This is the other problem I see – business owners who can’t tell me what they hope to gain from using social media.  If you don’t know what you want, how do you expect to get it?

A clear and compelling understanding of who you are as a business, who your customers are and where they hang out is essential to your online marketing efforts. Narrow your position by focusing on one thing for your social media efforts – one message. Just one, you say?

Yes.

Your business may do many things, but should be recognized for being better than your competition at one thing. Get people talking about that one thing online, and you will win at your social media efforts.

Our continued success to you,
