targeted web content that sells

When I open the discussion of website content with my clients, often they tell me all the great things they love about their company, but not why their clients come to them specifically. Try as I may to steer my clients away from giving me brochure-type content for their websites, sometimes they are too afraid to deviate from their comfort zone of telling their clients who they are, instead of offering their clients solutions to their problems.

Please remember this one thing, if only this one thing about web content: The goal of your website content is to get your visitor to take action.

You want your website visitor to say yes to something on your site. Clicking forward on something on your website is the web version of saying yes.

In order to engage your visitor with your content you have to be able to tell them what’s in it for T H E M. Once you’ve hooked them by telling them how you solve their problem, you then tell them where to click, or how to contact you immediately. With this in mind, it’s important to remember that reading a computer screen tires our eyes. People read 25% more slowly on the web than they read print material. So your problem-solving web content has to be 50% shorter than print.

Let’s break this down -

Page Title: This should include the major keyword you want to be known for – not “home”, “welcome”, or “hello”. The title should not be any longer than 70 characters, including spaces.

Your USP: Your USP is the very essence of what you are offering to your potential customers and website visitors. Your Unique Selling Proposition needs to be so compelling that it can be used as a headline that sells your product or service on its own.

Product or Service Description: This should be benefit-focused. You should also understand your clients personality and what they feel comfortable with because you will want to write content that appeals to their personalities.

This is where you think like your customer and write content that answers: What do your customers want from you? What are your customers worried about? Why won’t potential customers buy from you?

Benefit-focused content is all about the customer and should answer the question for them, “What will this do for me?” or “Why should I buy from you?” Features-focused content are about your product (which can be your services) and answer the question for them, “How does your product or service operate?” You must always take your features-focused content and turn it into a benefit for your customer.

Start each paragraph with a bang. Use words like “Careful”, “Warning”, “Caution” – something that grabs the readers attention. Keep your paragraphs short – no more than three sentences per paragraph and use font sizes that your target customer can read. A simple list of three to five bullets or a set of headings works great fro targeted content – it’s easy for your customer to read and they are more likely to pay attention to what you have written.

Contact information: This should include telephone and electronic contact information – address and a map if you want people to visit your location.

Call To Action: Every page on your website should have a call to action – something you want your visitor to do.  Do you want them to call you?  Buy a product from you?  Sign up for your monthly newsletter?  Then tell your potential customer “What’s included” if they do what you want them to do.  Make them an offer they can’t refuse.

Use testimonials: Always have testimonials.  Always.

And remember -

  1. Jargon is sin – don’t use it.
  2. No “tech-speak”.
  3. Don’t use humor unless your product or service is humor.
  4. Offer a guarantee.
  5. Keep it short and simple.
  6. Images don’t sell unless you are a travel site.

One of the common difficulties business owners have is understanding what they are paying for when they contract with a web design company to handle the design, or redesign of a website. The charges reflect what they have contracted, but more importantly, businesses are paying for -

  • Time – We believe this concept is the most difficult for many business owners to understand. They look at a completed website for x amount of dollars and think they are paying for a website, when in actuality they are paying for the time it takes to create the website. Often the “small tweaks” business owners ask for, is actually a time consuming mini- project, and what they are charged for is the time it takes to do the so-called “small tweak.”
  • Experience – Businesses should select a web design company who have been around for at least 5 years building and deploying web sites and Internet solutions. The web company should have experience managing web development from conception to delivery. The company should also employ search engine friendly techniques. This type of experience costs more money per hour (and per project), but will save your business money and headaches in the long run. You also want to make sure the company is going to be around to support your website in the future. Many companies like Forward Motion Studios have a monthly retainer plan which allows clients to request minor changes without having to go back through a quote and approval process.
  • Styling – An expert design company has designers on staff who are up to date on the latest trends in design, and posses the ability to create designs that are unique to your vision of what your company brand says to the world. The more experienced the designer, the more you will pay for time spent in the design portion of your website. Again, your rate reflects the experience of the designer.
  • Project management – An experienced web design company like Forward Motion Studios, has someone who manages the design projects to ensure continuous accountability and client oversight during the entire process. This can also part of the fee that you pay when you work with an experienced design company. You aren’t the only client a large design firm has, so it’s important to know someone is watching every step of your design process and making sure it is executed to your specifications.

It is not difficult to find web design companies who seem to be a good bargain, or people who work by themselves and offer design services as a one-person, low cost freelancer. But, in the web design world, always beware that you do get what you pay for. Make sure you are paying for experience. Make sure you are not paying for someone who is learning as they go. Also you need to consider what could happen if the person gets sick or has a family emergency. Who will be working on your web design project then?

Also, don’t be fooled by companies offering a low $500.00 start rate for a website and $25.00 – $50.00 a month under a two year contract. You are actually paying anywhere from $1,100.00 – $2,200.00 for your site, but it doesn’t look like it because of the $500.00 low fee upfront. And keep in mind that the monthly fee does not include any updates.

Hopefully this information helps you understand what you are paying for when you contract with a web design firm and understand what you are paying for when you hire an experienced web design company.

Internet marketing has become a very time-intensive project for most businesses and SEO Consulting is a new position in the web design industry to handle this problem.

It used to be easy for a business website to get found in search. A web developer might place a few lines of meta tag code in home page and submit the site to the popular search engines. It’s not so simple anymore. The internet is just too big.  But there are steps you can take to help drive traffic to your web site.

Santa Rosa Web Design Firm Forward Motion Studios offers the following 10 ways to drive traffic to your website -

  1. Make sure to name each one of your pages using a keyword phrase people will use to find your business.
  2. Offer values on your web site for your ideal client. This can include recommendations, tips, coupons, valuable information and links to other web sites.
  3. Provide a get-updates email subscription box.
  4. Use keywords in the text content of each web page. They work best when they fall at the beginning of sentences and appear higher on the web page.
  5. Each web page should have a title which includes a keyword phrase at least once.
  6. Conduct periodic contests through your web site and announce the winners on your site too, or have a contest for only those people who subscribe to your newsletters through your website. Announce the winner on the site – as well as through your email newsletter.
  7. We cannot emphasize this enough to our clients – be sure to put your business web site address on all your printed literature which means :  business cards, letterhead, the top left of your envelopes below your business address, all brochures, monthly newsletters, e-mail signature, and on any print or online advertising.
  8. Join social networking sites like Facebook, Meet-up, Yelp, and Twitter.  Provide valuable insights and always sign everything off with your web address.
  9. Join local networking groups like BNI, Toastmasters and Rotary and always make sure to mention your website when you present and socialize. Invite members to join your email marketing list.
  10. Hire Santa Rosa Search Engine Optimization Expert Forward Motion Studios Web Design to handle your search engine submissions for you!

Web site SEO fine-tuning can be time-consuming because it is painstaking work that takes specialized knowledge.

For this reason, we offer our valued clients the opportunity to sign up for a monthly maintenance plan for a small fee.  We work diligently to insure your website gets found in search.  This is very different than a company who promises to get you on page 1 on Google, which isn’t possible to guarantee.

The more important point is: are the people who are going to buy your services finding you in search?  And if not, what can we do about that?

Call us today and we’ll rock your search.
